Our illustrious leader’s second open meeting was very patchily attended compared to his first one. Maybe it’s because he only gives slippery answers. A simple question about planned redundancies (we have a £1.4m deficit which he said we’d cleared but have now freshly acquired as a result of the latest UCU pay settlement with implications for the budget) gets the answer “It would be very unfortunate if we had to make compulsory redundancies”, and another simple question about why my institution didn’t anticipate the pay deal gets the response “I agree that if we could have anticipated the pay deal it would have been a mistake for us not to have factored it in”. Somebody from the union asked some important questions. One good thing is that HERA increases will be backdated to August 06. Another good thing… What was it again? No, I’ve forgotten.
