Three theories of humour

The day after pointing out in conversation with a colleague out that emotions can have profound physical effects such as sobbing and weeping, I laughed so much at Simon Amstell teasing Vanessa Feltz on this episode of Never Mind The Buzzcocks I spat my tea. For example:

Vanessa: I don’t know that song – I’m either too young or too old.

Simon: Old.

In a Prospect first draft, via Norm Jim Holt outlines and discusses three theories of humour – Hobbesian superiority, Freudian relief and Kantian incongruity.

Now I realise that the reason I like Simon Amstell so much (besides the fact that he’s from Redbridge) is that he’s triple strength. Innuendo, merciless piss-taking and unexpected props.
