I would say this one is more down to earth. Too many men were known to faint or otherwise loss their marbles when witnessing a “delivery” (which is also a strange word to use, but I’ll let it be). Since “wife” means “a man’s partner in marriage”, and midwife is definitely a partner, at least at some stage, I can dig it.
